My Favorite Summer Looks: Patterned Leggings

This post is part one of a little mini-series I’m starting called “My Favorite Summer Looks” which is basically anything I’m excited to try or buy for this summer.  The first look is the patterned leggings.  It’s a trend that I haven’t yet purchased yet but I’m always thinking of ways to wear them once I find the pair that’s right for me.  Normally, I don’t really like when people wear leggings as pants unless they pair it with a long top or tunic but this look is super sexy and personally, I think wearing them as pants is probably the best way considering the leggings should be the statement piece in the whole ensemble.  So without further ado, here’s the first look I constructed!

Patterned Leggings Look 1

As usual with any of my Polyvore looks, I tried to add pieces that were actually affordable for the average person just in case there’s an item someone is looking to buy!  Hope you like it!

Beauty Top 5 Series: Essential Makeup Brushes

This post is for anyone looking to start their makeup brush collection and doesn’t know where to start.  In my opinion, through experience, I’ve found that these five brushes I typically use every day and they would be a great start to someone just getting started with using brushes.  Please note that the five brushes apply to the “type” of brush, not the specific brush you should get.  There are several brushes that fall under each category and you certainly don’t have to just limit yourself to one per category.  For some useful examples and visual aids, I’ve added pictures of makeup brushes from a low end seller, Coastal Scents and a high end seller, MAC Cosmetics.  There are of course many other places to get great brushes (some of which I will list below) but these are just some examples.  Prices and names/numbers of brushes are included.

1. Flat Shader Brush (For Eyeshadow)

Their purpose is to apply eyeshadow.  Simple and easy, right?  Flat Brushes are ideal because you can pack on the color or just sweep it across the lid.  Of course, they come in different sizes, and the one that’s right for you will depend on your eyelid size or how much coverage you want. The right flat brush could also be used, in some cases, as a concealer brush as well.  There’s no rule that you can’t use a brush in any way you want to!

2. Crease (Or Blending) Brush

One way to add dimension and depth to your eyeshadow is to apply a crease color.  A tapered blending brush or crease blush is ideal for doing this because its shape allows you to easily maneuver the brush into the crease of your eye (or the hollow space of your eyesocket or the defined line created when you open your eyes.)  The more pointed the tip of the brush is, the more defined your crease color will be.

3. Big Powder Brush

A big powder brush is mainly for an all over application of powder to the face whether its translucent powder, a powder foundation or bronzer.  Some of these big brushes (like the buffer brush pictured above) can even be used to apply liquid foundation or you can use something called a stippling brush, like this one.  But for powder, I like to think that the bigger and fluffier, the better.

4. Blush Brush

Just like with everything else, blush brushes don’t have to be used solely for blush application.  They can also be used for contouring or highlighting, especially if their angled. An angled brush makes it easier for you to apply the product to your cheek bones and create that slimming shape to our faces that we seem to love so much!

5. Small Detail Brush

Last, but not least for your makeup brush essentials, is the small detail brush.  This can serve a myriad of purposes such as applying highlight to your inner eye (tear ducts), applying lip color, putting eyeshadow on your lower lash line, and even applying eyeliner, for example with a brush like this.

Other things to keep in mind…

Natural Vs. Synthetic Brushes- This is always a hot debate in the beauty world but honestly, in my experience, I’ve had synthetic brushes that were so soft they felt natural and natural brushes that weren’t so hot, so it really depends on the brand.  But there are ways to make synthetic brushes softer, for example, using hair conditioner after washing them.

High End Vs. Low End- Another hot debate.  There are people who refuse to buy anything other than MAC or other high end retailers for make-up brushes and there are others (like me!) who maybe can’t afford to have dozens of MAC brushes so we settle for the less expensive ones.  My advice: Focus on the lower end eyeshadow brushes and smaller brushes and splurge on the bigger ones for the face.

Other places to get brushes:
E.l.f. has really cheap brushes that are pretty decent in terms of quality.  And when I say cheap, I mean like $1.00 brushes!
Sigma brushes fall somewhere in between MAC and Coastal Scents and their brush sets are a wonderful investment!
BH Cosmetics is essentially the same as Coastal Scents, but (if I’m not mistaken) has less brushes to choose from.
And finally, an old classic, Sephora, which not only has brushes from best selling brands but also a pretty great collection under their own brand!

Hope you enjoyed this post and I hope it’s helped somebody out there!  Thanks for reading!

Trying something new…

20120419-233645.jpg

I got my nails done today and got the curved shape I’ve been seeing everyone with lately. So far, it looks pretty cool! I’m used to having short nails so I have to get used to the length. So far I’m experimenting with nail colors until I find the right look. But I’ll be sure to fill you guys in on all my nail experimentations!

Biker Babe Wish List!

I am obsessed with bicycling! I got a bike from my bf for Christmas and I just got to ride it for the first time today and I had way too much fun! It’s something that I plan on doing a lot more often not only because it’s a blast but because it’s really good exercise. It got me thinking…I’m gonna need some biker gear! So naturally, I compiled a little wish list of affordable things I believe are necessary for a girly girl like me to have in order to be a bicycle babe!

20120418-233730.jpg
Trying to carry a purse while riding a bike can be pretty annoying. Today I had a cross body bag but it still got in my way and it was too small for me to carry important things like tissues and a water bottle so a backpack is necessary. But I wouldn’t get just any one, it has to be girly and cute!

20120418-233954.jpg
This might sound a little strange but I do not own a pair of sneakers. I always thought that they were kind of juvenile and boyish so as I grew into adulthood, I kind of left sneakers behind completely. But now that I want to work on being more active, sneakers are necessary.

20120418-234211.jpg
I learned the hard way that wearing jeans while riding a bike is just not a good idea! The bottom of them, around the calf and ankle area were constantly getting snagged and dirtied by the pedal. I definitely see why bikers always wear tight pants or shorts. I’ll go with tight capris!

20120418-234643.jpg
Coasting down a hill on a bike is so cool but it can actually get a little cool…or COLD rather. A nice warm and stylish hoodie would have helped!

20120418-234852.jpg
And finally…safety’s first! I got away with it today but riding with a helmet, especially if I’m ever going to ride in the city, is really important. They might be “noob-ish” but busting your head open is even more noob-ish!

And that’s my biker babe list! I found all these items on ShopStyle but I’m sure any alternative to the things listed will be sufficient! As usual, thanks for reading!

The frustrations of shopping…

20120414-230607.jpg

Shopping and I have had a Love/Hate Relationship for a while now, ever since I was old enough to do it on my own. There’s nothing more thrilling than catching a good deal on an item you want so badly or finding something that literally makes you want to squeal with joy. But those pesky draw backs…like the painful marks you get going through the middle of your fingers from those plastic bags. And the blisters and general pain you get in your feet from standing in long lines. And lest we forget, that sinking feeling of watching a huge chunk of your budget go into just a few items from one single store. And I don’t know about everyone else, but I usually get home, looking through my new purchases and think, “I didn’t get ENOUGH!”

Lately, I’ve been enforcing this “quality over quantity” rule when it comes to expanding my wardrobe but I’ll be the first to admit that it’s super hard! I was so used to just going to cheap stores and getting bags full of things but those things didn’t last long and I would end up tossing them less than a year later. Now, I’m shelling out the same amount of cash but for less, more longer lasting items but still I can’t help but feel a little unfulfilled. This is when I start to envy movie stars and celebrities who make enough to have both quality and quantity!

I know I’m not alone in this! Let me know how you guys/girls feel?
And thanks for reading!

Nail Design of the Day: XOXO

20120407-233438.jpg

After my weekly experimentation with my nail polishes, I came up with this cute and fun look. I’ve had this grey color for a while but hardly ever wear it because it’s so drab and boring by itself so I decided to jazz it up with violet, yellow, navy blue and teal colors. If you’ve got a steady hand, it’s pretty easy to do. I even pulled it off successfully with my left hand which was quite a task!

20120407-233819.jpg

That’s all! Just thought I’d share that with you guys!

Also on another note, I’ve changed my blog URL. That Bellemarie86.wordpress just wasn’t cutting it anymore. I wanted an address that people could remember and that was clever enough to be appealing. So I hope with that change and a few more that are in the works, I can get some more readers and followers! And I continuously and wholeheartedly thank any and every one of you that reads my blog and had subscribed! Love you guys!

Beauty Top 5 Series: Wearing Color!

When it comes to Make-up and Beauty products, I noticed that there are some women who seem reluctant to wear a lot of color.  When buying make-up or any beauty product, we tend to go towards neutral colors; browns, white, black, beige, etc.  But I think there are plenty of opportunities and interesting ways to introduce color into your beauty regime without looking like the female equivalent of Dennis Rodman!  Here are some examples: 1. Eyeshadow

Perhaps the easier way to incorporate color is through eyeshadows.  For example, with the ever popular smokey eye, use purple instead of brown or maybe even navy blue.  If you’re unsure of where to start, there are a lot of Beauty Gurus on YouTube that have thousands of eyeshadow tutorials! 2. Bright Lipstick

Another simple solution to getting out of a color rut, wearing bright lipstick.  Red is always a sure way to get a pop of color but there are a lot of other options as well.  The key to rocking this look is keeping the rest of your face as demure as possible.

3. Colored Mascara

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to wear bright blue mascara and shock your friends and family!  And if you’re really daring, you might even want to venture into colored falsies!  That would really make a statement!

4. Glitter Eyeliner

This is a more wearable look and it’s a product that can be paired with eyeshadows or worn alone like the model in the picture.  Glitter eyeliner is especially great for makeup beginners because the application is easy and you can find them almost anywhere for cheap as well!

5. Nail Decals

Don’t have the funds to get a manicure?  No patience or time to do your own nails? Well that’s where nail decals like Sally Hansen’s Salon Effects, come in handy.  You simply peel the sticker off, cut and file the nail to your length and VIOLA!  You have a trendy, colorful and stylish manicure!  The only downside, you can only use them on natural nails, that means no acrylic, tips or wraps.  And the higher end ones from places like Sephora can be a little pricey and don’t last as long as you’d want.  Go with Sally Hansen’s brand!  I guarantee, you’ll love it!

Wearing Color Jeans

I love the color jeans trend but it always take me a minute to figure out what I would wear with them and how I would rock them the best way.  So after drawing a little inspiration from a few celebrities, I created four looks using Polyvore, surrounding the Colored Jean.  So whether you want to be fun and flirty like Christina Milian, try color blocking like Kim Kardashian, keep is simple like Coco or pair them with layered neutrals like Jessica Alba, there are so many different ways to rock colored jeans!

Look For Less: Beyonce’s New Mommy Style!

I’m staring a new series on my blog! (I know you’re hyped but just try to contain your excitement!) This one will be all about recreating recent celebrity looks for less moolah. I’ll be using Polyvore to construct the collages and also to provide links to the clothes so that you can buy them! I’m really excited about this new series and I’ve wanted to pull this kind of post off for a while now!

I’m staring the series off with what I call “Beyonce’s New Mommy Look”.

This is Beyonce in NYC on March 29th, wearing a hot pink shirt with a high waisted, printed maxi skirt, fedora and black pumps. Her multicolored, quilt patterned skirt is hard to find and a little daring but the look can be mimicked with this more subdued flower printed skirt from Macy’s. The rest of the clothing and accessories are all under $50 for the fashionista on a budget!
